We Need to Seek out Nature When the Stresses of Our Lives Become Too Much

Our modern society offers amenities and conveniences that few of us would wish to live without. We turn handles and clean water comes out of a faucet, we flip a switch and the light comes on. More incredibly, we pick up a little device with a screen and we can read information or transmit pictures to anyone anywhere in the world. That said, there is something about nature that still beckons to us. Jim Dondero agrees that for all our technology and modern conveniences, we still find it important to conserve national parks to visit and forests and other wild areas. We grew up with nature for millennia and on an instinctive level it is comfortable because it is home.

A recent study backs this up. It is found in the Proceedings of the National Academy of Science, and it says that taking a walk in and around nature reduces one’s stress level compared to walking in a more urbanized setting. We occasionally need to “get away from it all” with “all” being the hustle and bustle of modern life. We know that modern life is good, and nothing would make most of us want to go back to a day before internet, television, toilet paper and penicillin when people had to live off game they caught that day.
