Embarrassing Global Tel-Link, commonly known as GTL, by issuing press releases showing GTL’s misdeeds in the past will help the correctional communications industry according to Securus Technologies CEO Richard Smith. Both companies provide telephone service to inmates, however, the Louisiana Public Service Commission found GTL was overcharging people who used the company’s service by double billing and setting phones to charge a higher rate than what was permitted. These wrongdoings occurred 18 years ago, but Smith says GTL is still not an ethical, transparent company and they are hurting the industry’s image.
I do not feel bad for GTL since there are many low-income families who forgo buying things that they need in order to purchase pre-paid telephone time for an incarcerated family member. Ripping these people off is shameful and I can see why Securus Technologies‘ CEO was livid. It’s not like families have a choice of inmate telephone providers, therefore, families, as consumers, deserve protection from predatory companies.
Securus Technologies recently acquired JPay, a company that furnishes tablets to inmates for email, educational opportunities, shopping and more. According to Securus’ press release through PR Newswire, the company will offer digitized payments, an inmate cloud and more to its existing suite of services.

The Coriant brand has recently been growing in popularity and levels of respect since it was established in 2013. Coriant was created by Marlin Equity Partners after the investment company bought the optical networking department of Siemens and a series of other technology companies. Despite only being established in 2013 the company has been challenging the established leaders in the wireless communications industry with a move to provide their skills and equipment in more than 100 countries.
Coriant has undergone a restructuring over the last few months of 2015 and into the first months of 2016 with the return of CEO Pat Dipietro to his former role with Marlin. This restructuring has seen the appointment of Shaygan Kheradpir to the position of CEO and DiPietro to a new role on the board of Coriant. Kheradpir is one of the best known names in the wireless communications industry for his work in many different industries.
Shaygan Kheradpir is perhaps best known for his work as a leader with the GTE Labs and Verizon companies over the course of the last 30 years. One of the reasons Kheradpir was appointed to his new role with Coriant is the high level of research and development he is known for completing in all the roles he has taken up in the past. The Cornell University graduate was responsible for introducing the use of small teams and 30 day deadlines for researching the use of new technologies.
Coriant has been at the forefront of introducing many new forms of equipment and software to the communications field. Shaygan Kheradpir has been brought in to make sure the development of the company happens at the right pace and includes the best quality of new technologies possible. Kheradpir has worked in the financial sector for a large portion of his career and has used these skills to complete a thorough review of the work of Coriant; this review has allowed the new CEO to have a head start on the development of Coriant for the future.
Securus is a company based out of Dallas, Texas. The company provides professional services to public correction agencies, law enforcement agencies, and over 1 million inmates across the North American continent.
Securus Technologies is committed to serving these groups with emergency response technology, public information, biometric analysis, inmate communication monitoring, and more. Its new product – THREADS 3.1 – is a groundbreaking technology which is a tool for “Big Data.”
This solution provides a patented upgrade to the newest in web technology interfaces and still maintains the powerful analytical capabilities which their customers have enjoyed in the past. The end result is a product that is easier to use and that performs better than ever.
This new version converts the platform to the highest level of web front-end technology: HTML5. Previous version of the software were on Silverlight. Silverlight does the job, but HTML5 is the wave of the future and Securus knows this. This new technology change allows Securus’ products to integrate seamlessly between other products, including their inmate phone calls system (Secure Call Platform).
Another key feature is the option to listen in on SCP calls right in the THREADS app itself. You can analyze the data in real time and view reports that are custom-designed for that specific context. This includes mapping and printing. It also can give you data on any of the video visitation software. Current customers will be excited to hear that they will be upgraded for free. If you have any trouble upgrading the software yourself, feel free to reach out to Securus’ customer service team.
This new technology is important for corrections facilities and law enforcement. It allows them to enjoy control and speed at the same time. Securus is all about secure solutions. And secure solutions are what public facing institutions need to maintain the upper hand and the status quo in the future.
It used to be that you graduated school, obtained a job, and worked there until you retired. However, the economic landscape has changed and so have careers. Now the internet has once again changed the career landscape and many people that previously would have worked for a business are now working as independent contractors. The downside is that working for yourself does not offer the same economic stability or safety net.
Handy.com is just one of many companies online that has built a platform that connects professionals to customers. The app is a great way for trade professionals with handyman skills that range from house cleaning to plumbing to furniture assembly find their own jobs. By cutting out the middleman customers pay less, professionals earn more, and professionals have the ability to work flexible hours as they need work. With over 10,000 professionals and a recent $50 million in funding Handy.com is taking off
However, the one thing that employees of the new gig economy do not have is stability. There are many great work opportunities for those who want to work alone from places such as Uber, Lyft, Handy.com, Etsy, and more. These days if you have a talent or trade that is marketable you can find a place to work. The contract services just need more security.
In most cases though, these contractors would be happy to offer job security. Handy.com CEO Oisin stated that they would love to offer more to their professionals. He said that right now the law is black and white and only allows for independent contractor or employee, but they love to be able to offer training, benefits, and education if there was a way to do it without employment reclassification.
He is not alone; there are now two new initiatives being pushed forward to help employees get a safety net if they work alone via contractors called the Good Work Code and a new coalition that is looking for portable benefits. They are both hoping to push the conversation further to talk about how contractors should have access to a safety net that is not only available, but also affordable.
