Paragon Biosciences: Changing the Way We Live

Paragon Biosciences is an investment company that seeks to find needs in the pharmaceutical industry and fills them by creating, incubating, and investing in biotech companies that will research and find the answers to fill those needs. They use the model of rational drug development to design, create and approve medicines that will help patients live longer, healthier lives. One of the companies Paragon Biosciences has created is called Harmony Biosciences, which focuses on finding medicines and therapies for those with sleep and central nervous system disorders. Decade is one of their companies that provides in-depth research on therapies known to assist patients with Alzheimer’s. The goal in both of these companies is to address the needs of a specific clinical area. The idea behind this is that narrowing down the focus of a group will lead to more precise and faster results. Paragon Biosciences states on their website that there are over 6,000 known diseases that do not have any known cure or treatment available. By using their model to create focused companies for specific needs, they hope to lessen that number.

Paragon Biosciences’ chairman and CEO, Jeff Aronin, states “Problems people have deemed unsolvable are the problems we are solving.” He has been the chairman of multiple pharmaceutical and biotech companies, as has received many honors concerning his entrepreneurship and commitment to finding new medicines to end diseases. Jeff Aronin discovered early on that his passion was medicine. It happened when he was shadowing a physician that was treating a patient with chronic seizures. They could perform major brain surgery, but the physician showed Jeff that he could treat the patient with medicines instead, in the hopes of easing the illness without conducting surgery. This influenced Jeff’s life and he dove into the field of creating medicines to fit unmet needs (http://chicago.blueskyinnovation.com/vault/network/aronin-jeff).

Jeff Aronin also supports other companies seeking to fill holes in the medical industry, like the Cystic Fibrosis Foundation. He also contributes to organizations that focus on education, as he believes education leads the way to change. These organizations include Teaching Tolerance and Big Green.
