Peas and Love: Livio Bisterzo’s Hippeas

Livio Bisterzo, an Italian entrepreneur who launched Hippeas in May 2015, has been involved in healthcare and the food industry for almost a decade. Through repeated testing and rounds of product development, Hippeas was created—a new organic chickpea snack. Since launching the organic chickpea puffs, Hippeas has created a global phenomenon in changing people’s perspective about the way they view their mind, body, environment and fellow humans around the world.

Currently, Bisterzo is married with three children and lives in Los Angeles. Before launching Hippeas, Bisterzo founded Green Park Holdings, an innovative company with a mission to create multichannel food and drink brands. The objective of the business was to build a portfolio with a health-conscious focus to encourage behavioral and cultural change in the way consumers eat and drink. Having studied at London’s prestigious University of the Arts, Bisterzo created his first business in 2003 called events business. Following the success of his first business, Bisterzo created a business portfolio in various fields including hospitality (Pollet St, Maddox Club), consumer brand businesses (Little Miracles and Kyoku for Men), and various lifestyle ventures. His brands have been featured in Harpers, The Times, Esquire, GQ, Vanity Fair, Sunday Style, and The FT and have earned many awards and accolades including being nominated in 2009 as one of London’s 1000 most influential people.

Hippeas follows the “better for you” objective in that healthy, organic chickpeas that are gluten-free, kosher, vegan, 100 calories per pack with good fiber and 3 grams of protein are packaged in an appealing way. Also, they come in a variety of flavors like Sweet & Smokin’, Far Out Fajita, In Herbs We Trust, and Pepper Power. Since the launching, Hippeas has done very well, recently partnering with Starbucks to sell a few flavors of the snacks —Far Out Fajita and Vegan White Cheddar— in more than 7,500 stores across the United States.

Besides having earned well-earned commercial success, Bisterzo is extremely proud that Hippeas has partnered with Farm Africa to support chickpea farmers in eastern Africa. The name Hippeas originated from the concept of being a modern “hippie generation,” caring about various social causes and concerns not just in the United States but all over the world. Therefore, in being able to embody the term ‘hippie’ and use its success to help the Farm Africa initiative known as “Food for Good” is a proud moment for Bisterzo and his team at Hippeas.
